How a 30-day payment delay changes working capital and gross margin

A 30-day extension on payment terms reads as a minor scheduling change in most finance conversations. In practice it moves cash and margin risk in ways that compound faster than the headline number suggests — especially when it happens quietly, customer by customer, rather than as a single deliberate decision.

What actually moves

Days sales outstanding (DSO) is the most visible metric, but it's a lagging one. By the time DSO has clearly extended, working capital is already tighter than the aging report shows — because the increase compounds against every invoice issued since the delay started, not just the most recent ones.

Gross margin is affected less directly but just as materially: financing the gap (via a facility, overdraft, or simply slower supplier payments in response) has a cost, and that cost erodes the margin the sale was supposed to generate in the first place.
